6 Sept: Terror suspect refused bail despite Supreme Court Judge criticising strip-search and shackling

Terror suspect Ezzit Raad has been refused bail despite a Supreme Court Judge criticising the onerous conditions in which he is being held, reported The Age (7/9/2007, p.2).
Judge raises eyebrows on detention manner: Supreme Court Justice Bernard Bongiorno on 7 September questioned whether it was necessary for Raad to be strip-searched and shackled in Barwon Prison’s Acacia unit. He said that while Raad had not proved exceptional circumstances to be released on bail, he was being held in a high-security unit usually reserved for people who commit “heinous” crimes. Raad, 25, from Preston, faces trial on charges of being a member of a terrorist organisation and funding a terrorist organisation.
