Canberra airport has significantly increased its fuel storage facilities to prepare for the week’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum summit, reported The Canberra Times (5/9/2007, p. 4).

New fuel tanks for jet fuel: In the short-term, the upgrade would allow Canberra to cope with increased traffic from Sydney, where the forum has brought an influx of planes to Kingsford-Smith Airport, the newspaper reported. “Quite simply, Sydney Airport can’t handle this sort of traffic for a peak event like this.” The new fuel tanks, which would hold about 250,000L of jet fuel, had been buried underground to ensure greater safety. The airport received deliveries three times a day to top up the stores, but obviousl needed to have enough capacity to handle any immediate demands.

50pc capacity upgrade: “We can see major growth in the aviation sector. We’ve had it over the last 12 months and we’ll see it in the next two years,” said Canberra Airport’s Managing Director Stephen Byron. The airport now has the capacity to store about 660,000L of fuel. The upgrade has increased capacity by about 50 per cent, and took only 10 weeks to complete.
