Alleged German terrorists call UK numbers; months of surveillance leads to raids

Posted by gasweek on 2 October, 2007

Terrorists planning a massacre in Germany on the anniversary of the 11 September 11, 2001 attacks, phoned British contacts as they plotted, reported The Mercury (7/9/2007, p. 16).

One number known to police: Calls to UK numbers were said to have been made from mobile phones linked to two of the men being questioned in Germany. One was said to have been a “known” number. British anti-terror officers were checking for links between the men and British-Pakistani terror suspects who may have trained with them. Scotland Yard officers went to Germany.

Suspects under surveillance: Prosecutors painted a picture of a ruthless cell of al-Qaida-linked fanatics willing to die in suicide raids with bombs more powerful than those used in the July 7, 2005 London attacks, The Mercury reported. The men had been under surveillance for months from agents of the BND, Germany’s domestic spy agency. US intelligence officials were also in on the surveillance. Agents swooped at a hideout in the village of Oberschledorn in North Rhine-Westphalia where the “bomb factory” was located. Forty other homes and offices across Germany were raided at the same time. Emails between the plotters and others abroad led to the authorities’ action five days before the anniversary of 9/11.

Converts among alleged plotters: A man identified as being the group’s leader, Fritz G, 28, was from Ulm in southern Germany, where he was understood to have worked at the city’s Islamic Information Centre after converting to Islam. The other German, Daniel S, 22, was also a Muslim convert and came from Saarbruecken. The third man was a Turk named Adem Y. 29, who lived in Frankfurt.
